Reduce Waste

Campus

  • Before buying new, sort through your materials. Many supplies can be reused or recycled
  • If you are disposing goods or material, know what can be reused (contact MSU Surplus) or recycled
  • Use supplies wrapped with minimal packaging
  • Use compact or concentrated products; or buy products that come in bulk sizes
  • Take a litter-free lunch to work by using reusable containers
  • "Lug a Mug!" - use a travel mug at work or at your coffee shop
  • Choose products made from recycled products
  • Provide filtered drinking water and reusable cups for employees
  • Avoid paper packets and save waste by offering employees sugar and cream in large dispensers
  • When making copies, set your machine to use both sides of paper to cut your consumption in half
  • Distribute memos via email

Home

  • Buy only what you need, use all that you buy
  • Buy in bulk and try to eliminate excess packaging
  • Take re-usable bins or canvas bags to the grocery store
  • Use a composter to reduce your organic waste going to landfill
  • Use cloth table napkins rather than paper napkins
  • Use cloth rags and mops rather than one-time-use disposal products
  • Choose quality, energy efficient products that are durable
